2006 was declared by some to be the year of the immigrant, with immigrant communities from major metropolitan centers to rural communities taking the streets in protest and grabbing the nation’s attention. Now is a critical time for a true discussion about immigration and the march towards a just immigration reform. This dialogue has been central on a national and local level in our government and communities over the last six months. However, the discussion needs to reach a deeper level and address several neglected issues.
We believe the attack against immigrant rights is part of a broader attack on civil and human rights; one that diverts attention away from the real issues we face as a society. Immigration is being used as a wedge issue to exploit the black-brown divides and to distract from an erosion of rights that impacts the lives of all people across racial, ethnic and class lines. As long as the poor, immigrants, people of color, religious minorities, those with disabilities, and all groups discriminated by hate and ignorance are used as scapegoats, viable solutions will never be found to solve poverty, ensure quality education for everybody, and provide affordable healthcare.
Join us for a forum with a panel of contemporary Oregonian leaders, followed by a reception and celebratory dinner featuring music, dancers, speakers, and a silent auction.
